When I was last in hospital, on the day of my release, I sat down on the floor, as I usually do, to get my shoes on when my husband isn’t available to help me as usual. A nurse came in, saw me on the floor, went nuts and wanted to file an accident report despite my assurances that this was how I got my shoes on. Eventually, she backed down, but not after clucking and tutting like a hen on steroids.

We have a cousin who has lost the use of his legs, and although only 9 years old he has his own way of doing things. Not because he’s trying to be a pain – but because that’s what works for him. Some hospital staff though insist on doing it their way, and don’t take the time to ask the patient what works for them Keep highlighting the issue – job well done.

Great blog, Stephanie. I work in a rehab hospital and I see this all the time. Disabled but living independent patient comes in and hospital staff can’t understand why they want to do things THEIR way. Well, of course, the answer is, because that’s the way that works for them. Anyway, I like get fucking creative. It’s a great motto.

Hi Anna,

What you could do is get interchangeable needle tips with a long enough cord (circular needles, in other words), and all you would need to do is make sure you buy the tips in the size that the pattern on the pom-pom yarn says to use. Are you in the US, the UK, or somewhere else?

I have been searching high and low to find out what needles I need to knit a straightforward square blanket (approx 116cm x 116cm)using pom pom wool.
I have given up on looking for a simple pattern. I only want to use needles (no gauges etc)
Would you please help?

So, essentially, your contention is that Dr Amy and Gina are both “mean”?

What do you mean by “[Dr Amy] clearly uses women and their tragedies to capitalize on her agenda in exactly the same way she claims NCB advocates do”? Dr Amy doesn’t make money from her website; Gina is asking for money for legal funds (so she can sue Dr Amy), and now is charging for access to her site.

She asked a simple question; why not give her a simple answer? If you either are or are not of the NCB persuasion (for whatever reason), then say so. Laughing out loud without responding isn’t a response that conveys information.

All comments about Gina aside (I don’t have much of an opinion in that matter), I think Dr. Amy’s comments are some of the most insincere, disingenuous words I’ve ever read. In a twist of irony, she very often behaves the same way she accuses Gina, and clearly uses women and their tragedies to capitalize on her agenda in exactly the same way she claims NCB advocates do. She once had the freakin nerve to ask me if I was a NCB advocate because of Ricki Lake, and I laughed out loud. I am more of an advocate because that’s how my mother gave birth to me! I find her comments ridiculous and think anyone who believes she actually cares any women is a fool.
