I’ve learned to spin yarn!

19th June 2012 By stephanie

I made some new friends on Ravelry in a spinning group, and one of them came over for tea yesterday and showed me how to spin on a top-whorl drop spindle. She even let me borrow one of hers so I can play with it! I’ve spun up almost all of my fiber that I […]

How to Make Fringes

17th June 2012 By stephanie

Today, someone on Ravelry posted about wanting to learn how to make fringes on their afghan. I’ve made many copies (different colour schemes) of the Lion Brand Fast Finish Throw – some with fringes and some without. Here’s a Lavender one I made: The main thing I learned was how to cut fringes all the same length […]

Religious discrimination lawsuit filed claiming Voss Lighting requires workers to be Christian

16th June 2012 By stephanie

A friend on Facebook posted this article, entitled “Religious discrimination lawsuit filed claiming Voss Lighting requires workers to be Christian”. Something similar happened to me when I was moving house as a kid, and we were trying to get me into a particular (what turned out to be religious) school – which involved a sort of […]

Roadkill Afghan

10th June 2012 By stephanie

Someone on Ravelry (brilliant, creepy, geeky) suggested I name this KIP “Roadkill”. I can’t stop giggling about it. Although the pattern calls for fringes, I think this time I’ll leave them off, which will be easier and result in a longer afghan.

Ray Bradbury, Dead at 91

6th June 2012 By stephanie

http://arts.nationalpost.com/2012/06/06/reports-ray-bradbury-dead-at-91/ Here’s another post I wrote about Bradbury, grammar and the song “F*** Me, Ray Bradbury”. Rest in peace, Ray. May you always remind us, “Don’t step off the path!”.

New Picture of the Seaspray Shawl

5th June 2012 By stephanie

My work partner, Spock, gives you an idea of the massive scale of this shawl. To the right is the canvas drawstring bag that I store it in when I’m not working on it. To the left is another bag containing a KIP [“knitting in progress”]: a dark beige scarf.

Russian Blog: Eat Carrots, Look Like Sophia Loren

24th May 2012 By stephanie

Not really – I’d rather look like Julie Christie, who won the part of Lara ahead of Sophia in David Lean’s “Doctor Zhivago (1965), but you will learn a lot about vegetables in Russian from this Transparent Languages blog. Loren was the wife of the producer, Carlo Ponti, and when Loren auditioned, Lean felt she […]

Embarking on a New Project of Destuckification: Learning to Spin

17th May 2012 By stephanie

For the past few weeks, I’ve been wanting to try and learn to spin. Getting Destuckified It took a Holodeck chat (my first-ever!) in the Starship Craftybiz to make me realize that yes, I can go ahead. (The holodeck is where we get together once a week or so to go over ideas, stumbling blocks, […]

“Phantom of the Opera – 25th Anniversary DVD”

29th April 2012 By stephanie

In my first blog post of this series, I wrote about the impressions I had of the film, the Vegas production, and general plot points. This will be somewhat disjointed – but that could just be my morphine speaking. Recently I bought the DVD of the 25th anniversary performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Be […]

Article: “How Doctors Die” – Thoughts on End-of-Life Care

28th April 2012 By stephanie

I came across this article about end of life care…from the perspective of a doctor. This could so easily become a rallying cry against doctors and “the medical establishment”. But I’ll try not to let it. I’m not going to give you platitudes about “dying with dignity” because I’m not certain there is such a thing. […]
