The Smugness and Frivolity of Food Geopolitics

I was reading a blog that indirectly mentioned a guy named Michael Pollan. A 2006 New York Times book review describes him as a “liberal foodie intellectual.”

It occurs to me that the people who complain about food (i.e. those who follow the 100-Mile project sort of thing as a fad, or fellows like this guy) are the ones who are most privileged – they can afford to complain about it because they have an overabundance of it. Worrying about where your next meal will come from tends to take the fad out of it.

Food isn’t an intellectual exercise to people who need it most; it is a matter of life and death.*

*It took a bit of searching to find a non-religious/secular child charities organization. I don’t know much about this one, but from what I read, they look good. If you’d like to donate, please click the image below.
